The New York–based creative juggles work and play on a trip to Los Angeles

By Hadley Keller May 31, 2018

Designer Kim Radovich spends most days much like any of her peers: sourcing furniture, designing schemes, and meeting with clients for the range of projects on her plate. But one day this spring, the Parsons-trained ASID designer swapped her swatches for the red carpet as she flew to Los Angeles to accompany her actress daughter, Elizabeth Hendrickson, to the Daytime Emmys, at which she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role on The Young & The Restless. AD PRO shadows Radovich for a day of remote work and a bit of star treatment.

It’s time to calm those pre-Emmys jitters with some retail therapy. (I did mention my daughter is nominated for her fourth Daytime Emmy, right? Humble mommy brag!)

I’m now the proud owner of a pair of black satin Aquatalia slippers and Alexander Wang espadrilles.

We get facials at Ellie and Sass, a boutique salon in Venice that my daughter designed and co-owns with Sarah Sluder. Elizabeth chats with clients while I chill in the courtyard under a fringed umbrella, enjoying this exquisite weather and entertained by a flock of screaming wild parrots that have found a home in the trees. Feeling really inspired in this space and dreaming up the Designer Bootcamp I want to roll out later this year.

Passing so many cute design boutiques on the way home and wishing I had more time to shop around for my clients. (Mental note to come back ASAP.)

The glam squad arrives: makeup artist Chanel Temple from Hourglass in Venice and hairstylist Kristen Shaw. Bon Iver is playing on Pandora. Lizzie is glancing over a new script she just got from General Hospital for a recurring role. Can you even imagine having to memorize 10 pages of script in a day?

Our ride is here to pick us up and take us to the red carpet! The show is being held at the stunning Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

2:25 P.M.

We’ve arrived at the Emmys! It’s just as overwhelming (in the best way) as you would imagine.

2:45 P.M.

Sheryl Underwood and Mario Lopez host the Red Carpet. Lizzie greets the fans and does an interview with KNET.

Powering down to enjoy the show and this special moment with my daughter!

8:00 P.M.

So, we didn’t take home an Emmy this time around, but I couldn’t be more proud of my daughter. After a week of detoxing and prep for the night, she’s craving pizza!

9:00 P.M

We head to the CBS after-party, and although there’s no pizza, we did get our hands on some butternut squash–and–sage ravioli and pancakes with chocolate shavings. This will certainly suffice. Lizzie plays catch-up with some friends, and we’re off to grab two (enormous!) swag bags before heading home.

12:00 A.M.

Finally home and in bed. I am already thinking about my flight back to JFK tomorrow. Ready to start the week as early as possible and prep for a marathon day on Wednesday at the ASID Design Summit in the A&D Building. I can’t wait to get home and get some puppy love from my dog Caesar. Thinking back on these crazy past three days makes me smile. My daughter is a delightful human being, and I’m so proud of her.
